Toyota 4Runner Pedal Commander Installation Guide

Toyota 4Runner Pedal Commander Installation Guide

I love the Toyota 4Runner - we all know this. In all of it’s iterations, it’s just a fantastic rig!

But, if you’re like me, you know there are always ways to improve even already great things. In this case, I’m referencing the stock throttle response time on the 4Runner - it isn’t up to par with what I want and need the vehicle to do.

Thankfully, there’s an easy fix—the Pedal Commander. It doesn’t change the horsepower; it changes how fast your vehicle responds to pressure on the gas pedal. This is not only great for maneuvering our vehicles in tricky terrain, but it even makes our Toyota 4Runner safer on the highway. (This is such a win-win.)

I've written about my love of Pedal Commander, but have decided a step-by-step install guide might be helpful to our readers.

Install Your 4Runner Pedal Commander

Step 1

Before an install, check out the contents of the package - make sure that all the parts are present. The Pedal Commander comes in a nice compact box with a clear top. Just slide the lid right off, and you’ll see the small instruction guide right next to the bluetooth Pedal Commander module, as well as the wiring harness. There’s a velcro/sticker mounting pad, so you can attach the module where it is convenient, and an alcohol pad to clean the area on your vehicle before attaching.

Step 2

The instructions recommend that you keep your key fob at least 35 feet away from the module for at least 10 minutes prior to the install. Likewise, it is recommended that you keep your 4Runner drivers side door open for 5-10 minutes prior to installation.

Step 3

Decide where it will be most convenient to attach the module. My recommendation is to put in the area below the ignition and above the gas pedal. I also advise you to run the wiring for the Pedal Commander down through the neck of the steering wheel, which opens up under the drivers-side dash. This allows you to hide the wiring, as well as mount it in an inconspicuous but easy to access area.

Step 4

Next, locate the gas pedal cable which lives just above the gas pedal, up and under the dash. To disconnect it you’ll need to squeeze the cable head that attaches it to the body of the truck. In most 4Runners, the tab you need to compress to release the cable is on the console side of the vehicle. You’ll find male and female attachments to the gas pedal cable; take the male end of the pedal commander and insert it into the female attachment of the gas pedal cable. Then take the female end of the Pedal Commander and reinsert it into the gas pedal. Viola! It’s connected.

Step 5

Now, it’s time to mount the Pedal Commander module to your truck. Clean the area on the truck where you'll be mounting your Pedal Commander module with the alcohol pad.

Peel off one side of the mount sticker and attach it to the back of the module, then peel the other side off the mounting sticker. Now mount it where it is easy to see and change modes while driving, but where it 's also out of the way. Tuck the wires up under the dash using the provided zip ties. Ensure you are left with no loose wiring.

Step 6

Now the fun part! Test it out. The Pedal Commander will start up when you start your engine. Not only does it have modes for:

  • City
  • Sport
  • Sport+
  • Economy mode
4runner-pedal-commander-ecoMode
4runner-pedal-commander-cityMode
4runner-pedal-commander-sportMode
4runner-pedal-commander-sportplusMode

It also has a sensitivity range from -4 to +4.

When you start your truck, it will automatically be (most likely) in city mode, sensitivity level +1. It is super responsive compared to what you are used to with your stock throttle response and you’ll feel an instant difference! The acceleration capabilities are off the charts in sport mode, and sport+, allowing you greater control of your vehicle and its movements.

Economy mode doesn't get as much credit as it should. I once averaged 20mpg in economy mode on the highway leaving from Frederick, Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia. Economy mode saves you mpg's by having an even less throttle response time than stock.

Step 7

One last important thing - to change modes, ensure your foot is not on the accelerator while attempting to change modes. You can change modes while moving, but not while your foot is on the accelerator. It’s as easy as that!

You'll Never Want to go back

Not only are the acceleration capabilities awesome and instant with the Pedal Commander, but it is also super simple to install! Check out our complete Pedal Commander install video below if you need any additional help getting your gear up and running.
