Upgrading the headlights on your 2014+ Toyota 4Runner to the Morimoto XB LED Headlights has many benefits. First of all, it is going to improve the overall aesthetics of your vehicle. Not to say the standard factory installed lights aren’t great, but let’s face it, the Morimoto XB LED headlamps are next level. And equally important, the Morimoto XB LED Headlights will make your Toyota 4Runner more visible to the people you are sharing the road with, therefore decreasing potential collisions. But, the pièce de résistance is that they allow you a greater view of the rugged “roads” and their obstacles, including all the critters that make their way onto roadways.
Install your 4Runner Morimoto Headlights
Here is a simple and easy breakdown of how to install your new Morimoto XB LED Headlights. If you're more of a visual learner, check out our complete installation video here.
Step 1
First of all, check the packaging and make sure it hasn’t been damaged; then check out the parts to make sure they are intact and ready to go. You will have:
- 2x Headlight Assemblies
- 1x Fuse Tap/DRL Harness
- Harness adapter (Only applies to 2021+ models)
Tools Needed:
- Panel Removal Tool
- Impact Gun (or regular socket and ratchet)
- 10mm Socket
- Phillips head Screwdriver
Step 2
Read all the 4Runner installation directions, watch the installation video, and read this important message from the manufacturer.
If your vehicle is equipped with anything but OEM turn signals (full assemblies, LED bulbs, or otherwise) in the tail lights or elsewhere: You may experience a hyper flash and/or problem with the sequential signal setting on these headlights. This is not a defect in the headlight and caused by un-matched impedance with your original vehicle settings.
Step 3
Now you can get to the fun stuff. Pop the hood of your 4Runner and take the trim panel off by pushing the center of all the pop clips and use the panel removal tool to remove them. Lift the panel off.
Step 4
Remove the three 10mm bolts on the forward part of the front wheel wells. Find the retainer tabs that hold the inner fender liner. Using the panel removal tool, work the tabs and gently pry the inner fender liner down and slightly away from the front of the vehicle.
Step 5
Now, remove the six 10mm screws from the underside of the front bumper. There are two in the middle and two on each side.
Step 6
Return to the topside and remove the two bolts by the hood release latch and the two below the latch as well; then disconnect the wire that runs to the front collision avoidance system. To disconnect it, squeeze each side of the plug, and then pull gently.
Step 7
Next, remove the two 2-piece pop clips from the top corners of the grille. There is one on each side.
Step 8
You will then remove the pop clips along the top of the radiator shroud. They release by pushing in the center of the clip and then prying the clip out of the hole.
Step 9
Remove the two pop clips and 10mm bolt from the grille assembly.
Step 10
The 4Runner bumper cover is now ready to remove. Pull the bumper cover over each stud on the sides, then work your way around the bumper cover to remove it. You will also need to reach in behind the fender liner and unplug the fog light.
Step 11
Remove the four 10mm screws holding the factory headlights on the truck. There is one on the front, one on the side-top of the headlight hidden under a piece of trim, one behind that is connected to a bracket, and one to the bottom outside. Pull the headlight straight out and disconnect all the plugs on the backside.
Step 12
Remove the black plastic section at the bottom of the old headlight. You will need a Phillips screwdriver to remove three screws. This part you will reattach to the new Morimoto XB LED headlamps.
Step 13
Now you are ready to hook those babies up! Take your new Morimoto’s over to the truck and match up the plugs to the ones at the front of the 4Runner. They are “key” plugs so they only match up to one other part. Connect the fuse tap to the injector fuse as indicated in the picture. NOTE: If you have a 2020+ 4Runner, you will use the EFI 2 fuse slot instead.
**2021 & 2022 4Runner Year Models**
There are 2 styles of harness adapters depending on your year and trim level. These will be shipped separately from the headlights!
LF531H: Applicable for 2021 4Runner TRD Pro & Limited trim levels and all 2022 4Runner trim levels.
It is important to note there is a Drivers Side & Passenger Side harness.
The harness for the passenger side only has 1 wire going into the male plug (black with yellow gasket) shown on the right side of the picture below.
The Driver side harness has 2 wires going into the male plug (black with yellow gasket), shown on the right side of the picture below.

Step 14
Configure the turn signal function to your preference. If you want a standard flash (full light around the C-light) as your turn signal, you will leave the red and green wires connected together, but if you want the sequential flash from the first bulb to the last bulb around the C-light, you will unplug the red wire and the green wire from one another.
Step 15
Now that you have removed the standard headlights and replaced them with the Morimoto XB LED, you will reinstall the clips, screws, and bumper in reverse order.
Step 16
Now that they are installed, give them a go. You will want to adjust them to ensure that they aren’t turned up too far or down too low. The vertical adjuster can be accessed from the top with the headlight installed. Check out the following diagram on the last page of this linked document to see the aiming standards. Keep in mind, the best judge of your headlight settings are whether or not when driving your light line is blinding those in front of you or passing you on the left via oncoming traffic.
