2003-2009 Toyota 4Runner Kicker Plug & Play 6 Speaker Install Guide

Install Your Kicker 6 Speaker Bundle

Here is a simple and easy breakdown of how to install you new Kicker 6 Speaker Bundle!

Step 1

Check the packaging and make sure it hasn't been damaged during shipping; then check to make sure that you received all the parts you will need for your install:

  • 1 Set- (2) 6x9 Component Set with (2) 2 3/4" dash speakers, crossovers prewired to speaker wire adapters
  • 1 Pair- 6.5" speakers (Rear Doors), speaker wire adapters included in box

Tools Needed:

  • 10mm socket
  • Panel tool
  • Phillips & Flat head screwdriver
  • Side cutters
  • Zip Ties

Step 2

Remove Front Door Panel

  • Remove the 2 phillips head bolts
    • Using a panel tool, remove the cover behind the door handle
    • Lift up on the arm rest pad to reveal the second bolt
  • Remove the push clip near the hinge side of the door panel
    • Depress the middle of the pin and remove
  • Remove the triangular plastic panel near the mirror
    • Pull straight out
  • Remove the door panel by releasing the clips along the edge of the door
    • Start at the bottom of the door and work your way around the sides
    • Lift the door up and off the window channel
  • Remove the cables
    • Unclip the retainer and swivel the cable around until the ball releases from the mechanism
  • Disconnect wire harnesses
    • Depress tabs and remove the door lock, window switch and door light

Step 3

Remove the factory speakers

  • Disconnect the wire harnesses from both speakers and remove any retainers holding the cables to the door
  • Use a phillips head screwdriver or 10 mm socket to remove the bolts holding in the speakers
    • Two 10mm bolts on the tweeter
    • Four 10mm bolts on the 6x9

Step 4

Installing the front door 6x9 speakers

  • Install the 6x9 speaker adapter ring using the factory four 10mm bolts
  • Connect the front door harness with inline crossover to the speaker
    • Match the 1/8th and 1/4 inch spade connectors from the harness to the speaker prongs. These should fit snugly and not easily removed.
  • Connect the wiring adapter to the door speaker harness
  • Line up the speaker wire with the channel in the adapter ring so that the wires do not get smashed when installing the speaker.
  • Mount the 6x9 to the speaker adapter ring using the provided phillips head screws
    • Pro Tip: Take your time and protect the speaker while tightening the screws that hold in the speaker.

Step 5

Installing the front door 2.75" tweeter

  • Connect the tweeter harness with inline crossover to the speaker
    • Connect the small male and female spade connectors
    • Make sure that the rubber insulators are covering the speaker connections
  • Insert the speaker and wiring harness though the larger mounting plate
  • Place the top plate over the tweeter, making sure not to damage the speaker surround
  • Pass the wires though the speaker mount in the door and line up the holes in the Kicker mounting bracket with the bracket in the door. Secure with the two factory 10mm bolts.
  • Connect the wiring harness to the tweeter speaker harness
    • Secure any loose wires with a zip tie

Step 6

Re-install the front door panel

  • Make all door lock, window switch, door light and cable connections back to the door panel
    • White cable connection goes on top
    • Green cable connection goes on the bottom
  • Hang the top of the door panel over the window channel
    • Make sure that the hols in the panel are lined up with the door
    • Once it is lined give the door panel a push to reconnect all the retainers
  • Replace the 2 phillips head bolts
    • The larger bolt goes behind the armrest
    • The small bolt goes behind the door handle
  • Replace the triangular plastic trim by the mirror
  • Replace the pin clip
    • Press the pin to the outside of the circular head
    • Put the clip back in the door and depress the pin till it's flush with the circular head
  • Replace the armrest and door handle cover

Step 7

Removing the rear door panel

  • Remove the 2 phillips head bolts
    • Using a panel tool, remove the cover behind the door handle
    • Lift up on the arm rest pad to reveal the second bolt
  • Remove the door panel by releasing the clips along the edge of the door
    • Start at the bottom of the door and work your way around the sides
    • Lift the door up and off the window channel
  • Remove the cables
    • Unclip the retainer and swivel the cable around until the ball releases from the mechanism
  • Disconnect wire harnesses
    • Depress tabs and remove the door lock, window switch and door light

Step 8

Remove the factory 6.5" speaker

  • Disconnect the wire harnesses from the speaker
  • Use a phillips head screwdriver or 10mm socket to remove the three 10mm bolts holding in the speaker

Step 9

Installing the rear door 6.5" speakers

  • Install the 6.5" speaker adapter ring using the factory three 10mm bolts
  • Connect the rear door harness to the speaker
    • Match the 1/8th and 1/4 inch spade connectors from the harness to the speaker prongs. These should fit snugly and not easily removed.
  • Connect the wiring adapter to the door speaker harness
  • Line up the speaker wire with the channel in the adapter ring so that the wires do not get smashed when installing the speaker.
  • Mount the 6.5" to the speaker adapter ring using the provided phillips head screws
    • Pro Tip: Take your time and protect the speaker while tightening the screws that hold in the speaker.

Step 10

Re-install the rear door panel

  • Make all door lock, window switch, door light and cable connections back to the door panel
    • White cable connection goes on top
    • Green cable connection goes on the bottom
  • Hang the top of the door panel over the window channel
    • Make sure that the hols in the panel are lined up with the door
    • Once it is lined give the door panel a push to reconnect all the retainers
  • Replace the 2 phillips head bolts
    • The larger bolt goes behind the armrest
    • The small bolt goes behind the door handle
  • Replace the armrest and door handle cover

Step 11

Power on your radio and enjoy your new Kicker 6 speaker audio upgrade!
